Embracing Abilities. Expanding Possibilities.
HB Threads started with a simple idea: give Harry Engnell, Jr., a meaningful job in the heart of Chicago.
In 1998, Harry, who is on the autism spectrum, graduated from high school eager to work.
But his parents, Harry Sr. and Marilyn Engnell, quickly realized how few opportunities existed for adults with disabilities in the Chicagoland area. They weren’t alone—8 in 10 individuals with a disability aren’t part of the workforce.
Instead of accepting that reality, they changed it. Harry Jr. loved repetitive tasks, so they got him a button-making machine. He started creating custom buttons and selling them, and just like that, a small business—originally called Harry’s Buttons.
What started in their garage grew into something bigger, helping hundreds of people find meaningful work and building a more inclusive economy.
As demand grew, so did the vision. To ensure long-term impact, the Engnells donated HB Threads to Easterseals Serving Chicagoland and Greater Rockford, helping expand job opportunities for even more individuals with disabilities across the region.
HB Threads produces high-quality products with excellent customer service. We rely on them to produce thousands of buttons annually for our fans.
